Moving moments in Prague ( by itchyfeet76 in Praha, Czech Republic )

History lessons were never my favourite. The content was interesting, but the teaching methods did not always follow suit. But learning about the past is always better in context.

Prague, for all its gorgeous architecture, elegant cafes and cheap beer, is also home to the Old Jewish Cemetery, the oldest existing Jewish cemetery in Europe. It’s located in Josefov, the former ghetto in the Jewish Quarter.

Barbie Culture ( by Hollie-Miller in Praha, Czech Republic )

Prague

For those of you who have visited Prague you would agree that there is no end of things to do, whether it be drinking wine for breakfast, clubbing it in one of the many underground "vampfests" or taking in the sights of the old cobbled town, none of it compared to my afternoon visit to the Toy Museum.

Situated in the grounds of the castle, on this particular day they had an exhibition we just could not resist. "Barbie Exhibition" read my friend in a squeel so high local dogs were alerted to it. So in we went.

What you need to know about Prague when you 1st arrive ( by yolie007 in Praha, Czech Republic )

Prague remains one of the favourite destinations for backpackers. With its cobblestone roads and Baroque-style Churches, the first thought that might come to mind is "this city is absolutely beautiful". Aside from its beauty, Prague is also known for it's cheap beer, women (Cheap? Does this include the women? Ed.) and a lively nightlife that can guaranteed that you will have a good time. This is a undoubtedly an excellent place to visit and party, but like most cities, there is a gritty, dark side that can empty your pockets and leave you feeling as worn out as a hooker at sunrise.

I lived in Prague for eight months when I was working in a hostel and have experienced some of these cons first-hand. Here are few tips I used to tell my hostel guests when they just arrive. If they listened, they had a good time, If they didn't well, let's just say they should have .

1.	Arriving in Prague.
When first arriving in to Prague, if someone says they came to pick you up from your hostel o...

Gypsies and The Charles Bridge ( by Travelling_Teacher in Praha, Czech Republic )

Seventeen years ago a culture seeking adventure to the Eastern city of Prague would have been one of risk and fear. Anyone venturing behind the Iron Curtain of the old Soviet Union would have been view with suspicion and may have raised doubts about their political alliance. Thankfully now the world is a cultural playground in which we are all able to experience without fear.

The barrier thrown up by the Soviet Union's Iron Curtain may have kept the Western tourist out for half a century but in many ways that has added to the cultural experience of Prague.

Then granduer of the Charles Bridge is awe inspiring as market stalls and buskers line the walkway. Built in the 14th and 15th century it was the only means of crossing the Vltava river. The beauty of the construction draws people to it like a magnet and from the lofty heights of the Prague Castle it stands out as many tourists scan the city.

Old World, New World ( by sara in Praha, Czech Republic )

Prague is my favorite city in Europe. Having visited in two different decades, once in 1997 and again in 2004, I feel lucky to have seen the remarkably inexpensive and lovely city Prague was before the tourist invasion. Today, despite gads of visitors running around with cameras, Prague, now a remarkably cosmopolitan city where one can hear several languages spoken in the midst of Old Town Square, still retains its irresistible charm.

My return trip to Prague coincided with my favorite holiday, Halloween, and I was thrilled to see a few American children in costume. The cobblestone streets and medieval architecture made Prague the perfect spot to celebrate a holiday devoted to ghouls and goblins. On that very evening, my boyfriend and I, on a weekend jaunt from Poland, where we were living at the time, enjoyed mulled wine and roasted nuts as we watched the fifteenth-century astronomical clock tower work its magic, the little figures of Jesus, his disciples, and death rolling out b...

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 3- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Praha, Czech Republic )

We arrived into Prague about 7pm after a relatively short 5 hour drive from Gottingen. Other cars continued to roll in as we enjoyed a few beers at the Cafe Dinitz.
We did receive one piece of very useful advice in Prague from the receptionist at the Apple Hostel. When we asked if there were any curtains to stop the 3 street lights directly outside the window from streaming into the room or to help reduce the noise from the concrete mixer being used in the all night construction opposite she helpfully lectured us "An advice, when traveling always take an eye-mask and earplugs."
After a late night we managed to get to the unpronounceable Wroclaw in Southern Poland. This turns out to be a very picturesgue old town based around a river and a couple of islands. However we have just a few hours here before heading to Lithuania tomorrow.

A moving moment in Prague ( by globetrotter in Praha, Czech Republic )

I came across Prague’s Old Jewish Cemetery on my first trip to Prague and I’ve gone back several times since. It’s extraordinary: a medieval graveyard full of ornate, weather-beaten tombstones piled on top of one another, sometimes 10 or 12 deep. It’s a beautiful, haunting place and for some reason there always seem to be crows or rooks or ravens cawing and wheeling in the sky above (very Edgar Allen Poe). In the Pinkas Synagogue nearby, the walls are decorated with row after heart-breaking row of the names of local Jews who died in the Holocaust – simple but moving. It certainly puts one’s own, tiny problems into perspective…

Exploring Prague ( by asa in Praha, Czech Republic )

This is just some of the many sights me and my brother saw on the streets of Prague during our travels around Eastern Europe.

There were loads of these statues of painted cows all around the city. I have no idea why. I think it was some kind of travelling street art exhibit, since I remember them being in London at some point too.

See and feel history in the Jewish Cemetery ( by madisteps in Praha, Czech Republic )

As a Jewish young woman, it was important for me to visit the Jewish neighborhood and cemetery in Prague. I did not realize how much of an impact this one small garden cemetery would have.
