The 66km Jatbula Trail starts from the mouth of the gorge and curves round by Seventeen Mile Valley to Edith Falls. It’s a serious hike; you need a permit, you camp and carry all food, and probably won’t see anyone else for 4 or 5 days (though I’ve heard of someone steaming through in two, and they regretted it because saw nothing). It’s a bit of a sweat bath but each day there’s always a great water hole to swim and cool off in. Although the scenery can be a bit samey there’re a few highlights, Seventeen Mile Falls in particular which is at the mid-way point. For much of the way it feels like you’re the first person on earth….until you come across a few examples of Aboriginal rock art of people and spirit figures hidden away in rocky overhangs. Spooky.
