Digging Deeg ( by samarkand in Deeg, rajasthan, India )

If you happen to be passing through Bharatpur for the fantastic bird sanctuary, it’s well worth making some time for nearby Deeg. Hardly any tourists visit the town’s decaying palace complex which is a shame as it’s a great and atmospheric spot. Deeg’s palaces centre on two large water tanks that usually get just enough monsoon rain to make the place look picturesque. Never mind some of the townsfolk doing their laundry beside what once were royal bathing steps; check out the enormous hanging fans in the great hall and a bizarre marble table for diners to eat at while sitting on the floor. There’s the standard assortment of hunting photos, royal gatherings and processions and slightly moth-eaten furniture. Head off to the outlying buildings and you can climb onto the roofs for views across the formal gardens and even to the old fort on a nearby hill.
