After four weeks in Morocco I couldn’t eat another tagine, no way. And so when I got to the fishing port of Essaouira I hoped for a change of cuisine.

Richc's experience was in Essaouira, Morocco. He went on 15 of August 2004 for 2 days. He went for tourism, food. Richc went with a friend. He got there and around by train. RichC's verdict is: recommended.
If you don’t know what a tagine is, it is a stew cooked in a clay pot (also called a tagine) and is eaten with bread (which is called tagine too) and after enough of them you will change (into a tagine). OK, so the last two aren’t true, but 4 weeks + Morocco = Tagine Trauma.
So my eyes lit up when I found the fresh fish stalls in Essaouira. It was quite literally the best thing I have ever seen. Well, almost. There were several stalls to choose from, each presenting their entire day’s catch out front.
As is almost essential in Morocco, I had to fight off the over-friendly waiters and pre-bargain a meal before I sat down. And what can I say...it was so fresh they could’ve served it as sushi. Delicious.
Lobster, crab, fish, prawns, I’ve criminally forgotten exactly what I had. But I do remember getting up from that stall and walking ten metres or so to another and ordering another round.
It was without doubt the tastiest food of the trip, and I have never had seafood of that calibre so cheap. Unbelievable. And by the way, Essouiara is a charming old town with cobbled streets, a wind-swept beach and a relaxed feel.

Looks good - I intended to visit when I went to Morocco but never made it. Where's the best place you visited in the country?

The Dades Valley in the Altas Mountains is magical. Great for trecking and very calming. I stayed in a lovely Auberge there called Kasbah Ait Arbi (kasbahaitarbi.com/) - run by three of the nicest brothers you could meet. They like to play Uno. A lot.
