Pinkmarshmallow's travel blog in Oxford, United Kingdom. She went on 16 of May 2006 for 1 day. She went for tourism, relaxation, peace & quiet, get closer to nature. Pinkmarshmallow went with a friend. She got there and around by bus or coach. pinkmarshmallow's travel verdict is: recommended.

As summer approaches and the temperature gradually rises, two other factors increase exponentially for students at Oxford – the stress of Finals examinations and the need to get away. Just 8 miles from Oxford, Blenheim Palace relieves both, providing a perfect day out and, if desired, some countryside rambling.

As the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and home to 11th Duke of Marlborough, Blenheim Palace isn’t short of credentials, and for its beautiful architecture and historical significance it was declared a World Heritage site. Even if you had exhausted all the colleges in the city centre, you couldn’t fail to be impressed by the grandeur and fine décor of the Private Apartments, or the wide collection of paintings, tapestries and porcelain. As a location of annual white tie balls of the university’s more prestigious (and better funded) student societies, the palace also contributes to the modern day high life.

But my preferred way of enjoying the day is not touring inside but wandering outside, in its expansive park and landscaped gardens. And in particular, the longer walks around the lake, for which walking shoes are recommended, that take you to tranquil havens such as the Temple of Diana and the Boathouse. Another must-see spot is the Butterfly House, where hundreds of exotic butterflies reside, changing throughout the seasons. For the more strong stomached, there is also a selection of insects, including stick insects, beetles and giant millipedes.
