I loved to visit King´s Park during my stay in Perth. I would often sit under the shade of a tree on the cool grass and look down at the city below. Perth is a beautiful city, with the tall, elegant buildings on St George´s Terrace reaching up to the dark blue sky and the river, winding its way from the city centre out into the open ocean.

King´s Park is the place to go to reflect and relax, but it is also a fantastic place to celebrate. Australia Day is a HUGE public holiday and after a day of barbequing and drinking with friends and families, the population of Perth gather around the river to watch the much talked about sky works display.

We had chosen King´s Park as the perfect vantage point to see the celebrations below. Having enjoyed a picnic, sitting on the grass with the rest of the patriotic revelers, we waited eagerly for the display to begin.

In the growing darkness, the lights of the city twinkled and boats bobbed up and down in the river. Then, with a loud bang the sky works erupted into the night sky, exploding and showering the world below with vibrant colours. The crowd fell silent as we all tipped our heads back and watched! I have never seen fireworks like it – every colour of the rainbow, whizzing, swirling, showering and magical! It was truly spectacular and the atmosphere was electric.

What's the deal with celebrating Australia Day if you're not Australian? I've always thought it looked like such fun, but thought maybe I'd get scathing looks from the Aussies if I tried to join in!

I think if you're willing to get into the Aussie spirit, anyone can celebrate Australia Day! It is definitely an experience not to be missed if you happen to be in the country and I certainly didn't get any scathing looks...or if I did I was too stuck into the celebrations to notice! :)
