Located in North West Australia, Broome is a stunning, chilled out, outback oasis brimming with culture and good vibes. I only planned to stay for 5 days at the Cable Beach Backpackers Resort for a spot of sunbathing, but three weeks later, I was virtually part of the furniture. I had definitely become stuck in the legendary “Broome Time!”

One of the highlights of my stay was the evening I went camel riding along the stunning expanse of Cable Beach at sunset. It was still extremely hot as I headed down to the meeting point at the beach, wearing my sensible “camel riding” clothes. Having been unable to convince any of my new found travel buddies that riding a camel in 30 degree heat would be fun, I was the only person in the camel riding group on my own and so had a camel all to myself!

Me and my camel

Me and my camel

Now, if you´ve never been up close and personal with a camel before, you are forgiven for underestimating their size…and smell! Getting on to the camel whilst it was sitting on the ground was the easy part, but nearly getting tipped out of your seat as it slowly stands up was a bit of shock!

Once all the camels were up and we had been given our camel safety briefing – basically if a camel decides to run off, I don’t think there´s much you can do about it - we started our slow trek across Cable Beach as the sun began to set. There was some cloud about that evening, which set the sky off with the most amazing colours. It was breath taking!

Camels are often referred to as Ships of the Deserts, because of the gentle rocking motion of their walk and it´s so true! I felt so relaxed and lulled to sleep as we made our way along the beach and then into the undulating sand dunes to explore the bushland of the Hidden Valley.

As the sun slowly melted into the Ocean, the sky grew dark and thousands of stars appeared. Watching for shooting stars and hearing nothing but the soft tread of the camels was the perfect end to this unforgettable experience.
