The more random a place is, the more appealing, and this credo has led me through the wintry northern plains of Outer Mongolia, over the frozen lakes of Alaska in December, to the steamy edges of Iceland's geysers. My New Year's Eve lived up to the hype only once, at the Millennium. I spent it in Bethlehem's Manger Square, where one's arse gets pinched more often than one might expect. (It was memorable in many other ways, too.) I aspire to Cuba, Bhutan and New Zealand -- to name just three -- because everyone should have goals.
