An adventure in the Dales: From Buttertubs to Blakethwaite ( by lucysoff in Gunnerside, United Kingdom )

Our journey started in York where, with some excellent music lined up, we drove two hours to the little town of Muker, passing on our way the curious Buttertubs (pictured below). I was ‘reliably’ informed by my companion, Jon, that these were caused by glacial melt waters. However, a few hours into our hike, when every single geological query I’d made so far had been explained knowledgeably away with the same respectful nod to those ancient glacial melt waters, I began to doubt its authenticity.

Brecon and Monmouth canal ( by lucysoff in Abergavenny, United Kingdom )

A barge holiday is the most perfect antidote I’ve ever come across for any work or play related stress. If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends and can’t seem to stop then wend your way to the Brecon and Monmouth canal for some guaranteed down-time.

River acrobatics and backstreet kareoke ( by lucysoff in Phnom Penh, Cambodia )

Chilling out by the riverside was one of my favourite ‘activities’ during my six week stay in Phnom Penh. Young and old alike would spend their early evenings here- talking, sharing food and mucking about in the river.

Beer and bearded folk ( by lucysoff in London, United Kingdom )

I contemplated writing this straight after I got back from the beer festival last night, but after my fourth attempt at spelling CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale), decided it was probably a task best left 'til the morning.

The festival is held yearly at the impressively large Earls Court Exhibition Centre, literally one minute's walk from the tube station.

Khao San- a pit of smelly backpackers? ( by lucysoff in Bangkok, Thailand )

Khao San Road is, in all honesty, an overpriced, overcrowded and downright dangerous pit of smelly backpackers, but I’ve been through Bangkok several times now and something always pulls me back here.

Off roading and jungle lodges ( by lucysoff in Pai, Thailand )

Three hours in with the growling of our stomachs now accompanying the fourth rendition of the Beatles and Spandau Ballet compilation tape, I think the three of us were starting to wonder which country this jungle lodge was actually in. I still wonder if I should list Myanmar in my repertoire of places visited.

Loving rugby in Bath ( by lucysoff in Bath, United Kingdom )

If you had to pass a test to enter the City of Bath, there would only be one question:

What would you rather….?
1)	curl up in front of the telly with a cup of tea
2)	brave the freezing fog and horizontal rain to watch the rugby

If your answer is the latter (or you wish to learn the errors of your ways), read on….

Milan ( by lucysoff in Milan, Italy )

Milan is a wonderful blend of old and new. You can turn the corner off a street of super stylish designer shops and suddenly find yourself faced with some ancient Roman pillars.

National Science Museum, Milan ( by lucysoff in Milan, Italy )

Milan is a wonderful place to visit…but there’s an awful lot of old stuff (see my other experience here). If, like me and my boyfriend, you get a little tired of oohing and aahing over the ancient wonders, why not take a little stroll to the Science Museum where you can marvel over some more recent wonders.

A London Ditty ( by lucysoff in London, United Kingdom )

Sunday morn dawned bright and cheery,
Not like me, my eyes were bleary.
What could clear this head of mine?
A walk in the park! I’m not too weary...

Off to High Street Ken by train,
Hunger strikes and I search in vain,
But then I spot a handy place,
“Soup and stick”- a bizarre name!

I enter Hyde Park and pick a spot,
(It’s getting really rather hot).
Noodles follow then a snooze,
I read a little, but not a lot.

I begin my venture ‘cross the park,
The swans are worthy of remark,
The path wends it way from west to east,
Monuments loom round every arc.

The Tour de France is also on,
For the lycra-clad cyclists, fashion’s forgone,
They zoom past me at 50 k-
I take a pic and wander along.

Flora and fauna now take over,
A cheeky squirrel sits by a clover,
Tall grass tickles at my ankles,
The air is filled with nature’s odor (!)

I’m now approaching Speaker’s Corner,
I get a ‘free hug’ from a man with a banner.
Angry voices raised in tough debate-
Mostly taking th...
