Jimbo's travel blog in Nassau, Bahamas. He went on 23 of June 2006 for 1 day. He went for tourism, shopping. Jimbo went with a partner, a group of friends, an adult family. He got there and around by cruise liner, walking. Jimbo's travel verdict is: not bad.

Nassau is an island with a very distinct divide, the filthy rich (Opera Winfrey has a place there) and the poor. The rich reside on Paradise Island and the poor on New Providence Island. We docked and went onto New Providence to look around, the high street is pretty small and it mainly comprises of jewelery shops where apparently you can pick up a decent bargain with a fair bit of bartering room. Not really my thing, but if its yours then this place seems ideal.

Watch out for two things whilst walking around, pick pockets and drug dealers. Like I said it is poor and the locals are just trying to make a buck or two, so can be pretty blatant in their attempts. I think half the boat was offered some weed.

On the way back to the boat we figured a tour of the town in a horse and carriage would be good. The guys are situated right by the entrance, look for ten malnourished steads and white carriages, you can't miss them.
It was a bit hairy at times, from the guide hurling abuse at other people on the road, trying to pick up girls (men are well out numbered by women on Nassau) and the horse hitting 30mph in a carriage that was held together by 3 nails, 4 screws and some gaffer tape. The ride also included the tire coming off, a race with a car and a moment where we thought we were going to be sold off for a bag of weed.

To be honest these events made a fairly mundane excursion into something interesting. Its not comfortable, its not romantic, its not very educational but its edgy and fun!
Word of warning. Every one of the staff is after a tip, even if you didn't see the bloke when you left. The stable boy, grain boy, carriage cleaner, your guide, the person who helped you on, took your photo, waved as you left, looked at your girlfriend funny and the person who looks after the tips. Everyone.

Paradise Island

Paradise Island

As part of the cruise we had an excursion whilst on the island. A trip on a glass bottom boat. Now I have been on a few glass bottom excursions and to be frank most sucked.

This one was different. After a 30 odd minute cruise along the coast of paradise island, with a history of some of the properties rich owners and entertaining stories to boot and punch on tap (pure ethanol and a dash of fruit juice) we came to a stop.

The water was crystal clear, clean and still. We saw a whole host of fish and the guide was very entertaining and certainly knew his stuff. Yaaahh, maannn! (If you ever go on the trip you'll know where that came from)

Back to the boat, and although Nassau didn't seem like a place I'd particularly want to go back to it was entertaining and certainly eventful.

TIP 1: Make sure you make it to Atlantis to see the aquarium, apparently its awesome. I didn't make it but certainly wish I had.

TIP 2: The woman on the dockside shouting "Get your water honey, 1 dollar honey is probably not the best one to get it from"

TIP 3: The powerboat ride sounds sweet as too.
