Hugo's travel blog in London, United Kingdom. He went on 16 of June 2007 for 1 day. He went because he lives here and for tourism. Hugo went with just me. He got there and around by walking. Hugo's travel verdict is: recommended.

Ok, so I didn't plan it. There were more crowds than usual as I approached Buckingham Place hoping to walk on through Green Park and on upto a Picnic (wishful thinking on all fronts) in St James's Park....but i stumbled into a mass of people, colour and excitement. "Today is Trooping the Colour", says a helpful Bobby dressed in wartime era uniform - "have you not sent her a birthday card".

Even though the Queen has her birthday on April 21st a public celebration is held some time in June...for the good weather...

Below are a few pictures of the Trooping the colour which I admit are pretty poor. Apologies, I was a bit hampered by running out of camera memory, the torrential rain and indavertently getting stuck in totally the wrong place when the crowd was locked-down. Today it was more like 'Trooping the Damp Grey Squib'. Actually that is a bit unfair but with comic timing the skies opened up with torrential rain 30 seconds before the legendary fly-past. Even so the stream of historic bombers, modern fighter jets and the childishly exciting Red Arrows (which left a tremendous streak of red, white and blue the length of Pall Mall over the top of Buckingham Palace) was a true British spectacle.

Sorry not to have a decent picture of the Red Arrows, I was thoroughly wet and out of camera memory by that stage. Great sight though and highly recommended. I just hope you have better weather than me if you go next year...

It is quite a show...(not that I can see much)

See the clouds moving in? There are loud rumblings, not quite certain if it is the canon salute or some ominous thunder rumbles...

Just before the fly-past the crowd is unleashed towards the Queen waving on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

Look up...

At this stage I had to retreat underneath a kind persons umbrella as the rain drops were the size of cricket balls (almost).

Want to plan for another time? Then use the official Royal website for details of the Trooping of the Colour: http://www.royal.gov.uk/

Tell them to sort the weather out next time. Whatever the weather though it is somehow a simultainiously amusing and impressive event.

Great pics, but you should get a better camera as I think your forth photo is of a Spitfire, or a Hurricane. The Lancaster is the four engined bomber in the formation of planes in the fifth picture. My grandfather was a rear-gunner or "tail end Charlie" in WW2.
