Hugo's travel blog in Lauder, United Kingdom. He went on 01 of June 2008 for 3 days. He went for tourism, culture, interest or hobby. Hugo went with a group of friends. He got there and around by car or van. Hugo's travel verdict is: recommended.

As luck would have it, my trip to show some friends Thirlstane Castle in the Borders coincided with the yearly annual Vintage Car gathering. Excellent, not only an ancient fairytale castle but vintage dream cars too! I recommend it. If you are in the area then put 1st June 2009 in your diaries...

Thirlstane Castle pulls off a winning combination of Vintage Cars and a fairytale backdrop.

The Vintage Car rally has all sorts: fire engines, army vehicles, mini's, porshes, Ford Cortina Mk II's (!), a band on the front lawn, fortune tellers, bouncy castle, quad bike rides and much more besides. A heavingly busy event that is clearly super popular.

The castle is also open to visitors and well worth a quick poke around. Major Maitland Carew has done a top-job of re-instating the castle to give a whiff of its former glory.

Whether you like cars or not you will find this a fun outing.

for historians, this well-preserved castle has special importance as it was the home of the first and only Duke of Lauderdale who was a famous Scottish politician during the reign of Charles the Second and is the "l" of the word "cabal".
