Fort Dauphin is a spingboard for yet more nature action but we had a break, taking it easy for a few days in the town, then heading out onto the Lokaro peninsular. Fort Dauphin is a pretty windy and inhospitable place, so it is important to identify the best spots to hang out...basically Lavasoa, Chez Georges and Camp Pirate!

Hugo's experience was in TôlaḤaro, Madagascar. He went on 30 of November 2007 for 1 day. He went for tourism, beach, adventure, peace & quiet, get closer to nature, interest or hobby. Hugo went with a friend. He got there and around by car or van, walking, airplane or helicopter. Hugo's verdict is: you must go here.
The view of Libanona beach from the bungalow rooms at Lavasoa (the only place to stay in Fort Dauphin it seems)
high speed boating action through the reeds. Prepare to get soaked if the wind is in the wrong direction, as it was with us...
map of lokaro peninsular walks...and the 20k walk back to port dauphin if you are stupid enough to do it...
Crumbs, still quite a long way back to Fort Dauphin and how long is that beach exactly...answer: much longer than it looks...
The 20k walk back to Fort Dauphin is not recommended! The scenery around the Lokaro peninsula is stunning but do yourself a favour, save yourself a 5 hour walk in the pumping sun and take the boat! Spend the time more wisely taking it easy in Chez George having an excellent prawn curry.

WOW. Madagascar seems worlds away from small town Wisconsin where I am passing the Christmas holidays with my boyfriend and his family. Where did you hear about this resort? Prawn curry sounds amazing!

Lavasoa are the owners of Camp Pirate, so will organise that for you. Contrary to my usual travelling principles I would definitely want to book up at Lavasoa before I pitched up in Fort Dauphin. After scouting around it seems to be way ahead of the competition, although a bit more expensive. The rest of town can be pretty dusty and windy. Le Colbert is just opening a hotel in the centre of town but I would prefer to be just out of the centre by the beach and Chez George.
The Prawn curry was indeed good. A Madagascan speciality!
