Belle Ile En Mer: ideal holiday and relaxation island

Hugo's travel blog in Locmaria, France. He went on 20 of September 2006 for 1 day. He went for tourism, beach, relaxation, peace & quiet, get closer to nature. Hugo went with a group of friends, young family. He got there and around by bicycle, boat or ferry, car/van. Hugo's travel verdict is: you must go here.

I have been to Belle Ile En Mer a few times and love it dearly. It is located just off the coast of Britanny and reached by ferry from Quiberon.

The island has the relaxed and unpretentious atmosphere associated with the rest of Britanny. Apparently, Belle Ile is a popular and fashionable haunt of Parisians but I guess they all troop-in during August, so I have mostly missed out on this aspect.

It is really a family holiday destination but our group of friends (one of whom has a small nipper) love it for the pretty beaches, tasty food and relaxed atmosphere. There is not too much traffic on the island and many people bicycle to and from the beaches.

There are a few sights on the island and small artists galleries but don't expect too much...that is part of the joy.

Two small disclaimers: it is a bore to get to (which puts off too many people) and the sea is baltic (whichever way you put it this is the Atlantic, not the med).

I could waffle on about where to go and what to do but that is not really the point of this. Just wanted to say what a great place. Will definitely be going back.

I love that part of the world. Many years ago I spent 6 months in Brittany - Benodet, near Quimper, a lovely place with an attractive marina and beach and has a real unique culture and atmosphere. Many happy days travelling to Carnac and Rennes. I really should go back soon.

Actually, we stayed in a friends rented cottage. Simple but wonderful. Highly recommended.

adorable. sometimes you need to encounter a sleepy town such as this to appreciate life. we found such solace in croatia once as well. what a great little trip this looks to be. I'll be adding it to the list...

A definite spot to add to my list (which increases each day). I have heard that these islands are beautiful. Sometimes the better places are the ones that are more difficult to reach.
