Belgrade, Serbia’s capital is a really fascinating city – it is still emerging from its days of conflict yet is pulsing with life and full of interesting things to do.

A visit to Belgrade Kalemegdan fortress is a must, especially for the views over Belgrade where you can see the the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers. The military museum which is housed in one section of the castle is also interesting and proves that the politics of the recent conflict are still controversial. The last exhibit in the museum shows artifacts from NATO actions against Yugoslavia in the 1990s, including cluster bomb shells, depleted uranium ammo, and graphite bombs. More shockingly, the uniforms of dead soldiers and KLA weapons with blood still on them are displayed almost as trophies.

As for nightlife, Belgrade can provide some pretty unique eperiences. There are a series of barges on the river which are set up as clubs. My advice would be to steer clear of the first barge – as soon as the door staff realised we were foreginers they upped the entrance fee to an exorbitant price. Instead, head to the last barge which, unlike the others which are pretty much floating marquees, is an actual converted boat. With beer at 25 p a pint and drum and bass beats making the planks of the boat vibrate under your feet this is a truly unusual night out! Escape the dancefloor for a breath of fresh air up on deck, complete with views of Belgrade at night. I only wish I’d taken some photos!

Great tip on the last floating bar. Good rule in life - popular places often treat you worst. It is worth going the extra mile for somewhere harder to find and more grateful for your custom. Sorry you have no piccies too.
