Asa's travel blog in Cairo, Egypt. He went on 27 of December 2005 for 7 days. He went for tourism, relaxation. Asa went with an adult family. He got there and around by cruise liner, bus or coach, airplane or helicopter. asa's travel verdict is: you must go here.

I went with my family on a package cruise around the Red Sea back in December 2005/January 2006. We mostly visited places in Egypt, but also went to parts of Jordan too. It was a trip we had been waiting to take for ages and it certainly did not disappoint. A package holiday is not the type of trip I normally take, but after the extended stay in Palestine that I had just come back from at the time, just chilling on the boat and not having to plan anything was a refreshing change. I'd definitely recommend it, but I would not want to stay for longer than the week I did (I would have got bored).

Although we spend a lot of time relaxing on the boat, we managed to go on several of the excursions ashore too. We visited a lot of tourist attractions in Egypt, a lot of the places you would typically associate with the country. We went to the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Cairo, which is absolutely amazing and contains some truly astonishing stuff, but unfortunately you are not allowed to take pictures inside.

Two things you are positively encouraged pictures of are the Pyramids and the Great Sphinx, so here are some of my best shots from those historical monuments in Giza (which by now is a suburb of the sprawling metropolis that is Cairo).

    Great pics there- good stuff.
I really want to visit the pyramids but am a little concerned that all the toursim would spoil what is, for me, a very mysterious place. Should I stop fretting and just go?

Thanks. Yea just go, it's worth it. Just don't go expecting a deserted place in the middle of the desert -- this I why I included the shots of all the coaches and people and the one of how you can see the pyramids from the town.

You can avoid the worst of it by going on your own instead of as part of a tour (hence you can take your time etc). Also, learning a little Arabic goes a long way.

    Everyone repeat after me:

    LA' !!! -- NO
    Shukran -- Thanks

    :)

Good to know what to expect; I had a slightly more dreamy vision of what the pyramids were like. They are pretty spectacular though, depsite all the busses, tourists and suburbs.
