A Vengeful Vesuvius ( by Alexandra in Pompeii, Italy )

It was a relief to make it in one piece out of the crazy neapolitan traffic. I’ve seen some mad driving on my travels, and Naples’ is right up there with India and Madagascar. We took the coast road to dusty Ercolano and its ancient forebear Herculaneum.

Haifa's Harmony ( by Alexandra in Haifa, Israel )

I arrived in Haifa late at night, flustered and broke, after forking out for a taxi from Caesarea when the last bus failed to show. Caesarea – Herod’s summer base on the Mediterranean - was beautiful and had been worth it, but I was already thinking that Haifa had better be good!

Diving in the Desert ( by Alexandra in Al Ghardaqah, Egypt )

One manic, sweaty August, we were attempting to ‘do’ Egypt in a week out of Luxor. We had just completed a double-night-train trip to Cairo and figured we could squeeze in the Red Sea before our flight home. We had hooked up with a young guide who had been amazing, arranging everything at Egyptian prices and even bribing our way into a new dig in the Valley of the Kings on the university dig team’s day off, with treasures in situ!

Mush! ( by Alexandra in Whistler, Canada )

I’ve been wanting to do this for years, and when my plans were scuppered in Alaska (no snow – go figure!) I was determined to get on a dog sled and drive a team before the winter was out.

I woke up early at the cozy UBC hostel, raring to go. I drove the Boyfriend nuts over eggs benny in Creekside’s Southside Diner, wondering aloud about the dogs, the sleds, the commands…and boring him with stories from the Yukon Quest book I was reading. Finally, it was time to go.

A Quick Seattle Stopover ( by Alexandra in Seattle, United States )

Seattle is a great place for a day trip, and I couldn’t believe the Boyfriend had lived for 2 years in Vancouver and never made the trip to the next town. Returning from a weekend in the mountains, we determined to do Seattle in a day and show him what he’d been missing.

Wilkommen in Washington ( by Alexandra in Leavenworth, Usa, United States )

The Boyfriend and I hired a rusty camper and set out across the border into Washington for the Easter weekend. Our loop of the Olympic mountains had been scuppered by windstorms and fallen giant redwoods, and our loop of the northern Cascade mountains was out because part of the road would be under 20 feet of snow until late May. Washington had been hit pretty hard this winter.

So we drove a miniature loop out to Leavenworth, and back via Snoqualmie Falls (of Twin Peaks fame). Just through the snow at Steven’s Pass ski resort, we saw our first ‘Wilkommen in Leavenworth’ sign. The few scattered buildings on the outskirts had gables and ornate shutters, but didn’t prepare us for what awaited.

Large Nights Out in Tel Aviv ( by Alexandra in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel )

When you think of Tel Aviv – be honest – you think of bombs and tanks and green fatigues. During the time I spent at college in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv meant something quite different. Tel Aviv is the Large Night Out, the place to go club-crawling, the coolest beach to be seen on and the home of some of the hippest music clubs in Europe or the Middle East.

Frantic in Fez ( by Alexandra in Fès, Morocco )

We had arrived in Fez late the previous night, and went to bed on a gin and tonic and some almonds from the hotel bar. Our cheap, attractive but freezing accommodation at the hotel Batha sat just inside the old city walls, and we planned to spend our weekend just mooching around the souk and visiting the tanneries.

A White Whistler Christmas ( by Alexandra in Whistler, Canada )

Just past Squamish, we drove into the snow. The Mother-in-Law squealed with delight and started a grin that would last 4 days. Here was the White Christmas she’d been waiting for.

Riding Vancouver's 'Local Mountains' ( by Alexandra in Vancouver, Canada )

Yes, we’ve got Whistler-Blackcomb, and it’s fabulous year round. We also have that famous ‘champagne powder’ in the BC Interior that everyone should roll in at least once. But what do you do when you need a fix at 9pm after work on a Wednesday?

Vancouver’s three ‘local mountains’ are all within a half-hour drive of the downtown core. They’re wet, they’re icy, they’re nuts on a Saturday, but they’re ours and they’re one major benefit of living in this city.
