Pottering North through Scotland ( by Hugo in Thurso, United Kingdom )

This summer I started my explorations of Scotland. Rather than detail all my little forays, here is a little montage to whet your appetite and share some of the mini-highlights. So much more to see, cannot wait to do some more pottering.

The mind boggling Edinburgh Fireworks concert ( by Hugo in Edinburgh, United Kingdom )

I've heard much of the grand finale of the international edinburgh arts festival - the fireworks over the edinburgh castle - but had never made it. Last night, after a last-minute trip, a friend managed (heroically) to win the ticket-lottery to get the mightily sought-after bits of paper to get entry to the seated stand below the castle. Cripes; it was absolutely mind-bogglingly stunning and I shall never forget it. The setting was terrific with the edinburgh castle perched above us but once you add in the mix of the scottish royal orchestra strumming a little Brahms and Dvorjak set to a magnificently timed orgy of fireworks you have something a tad special. The cherry on the cake was the cascading waterfall from the castle wall down the side of the rock face - quite magical. A few brief images of the evening below....highly recommended. I hope to go back.

The John O Groats Myth is Dead ( by Hugo in Dunnet Head, United Kingdom )

I'm sorry to spill the beans but Dunnet Head is apparently the most northerly point on UK mainland. So all you folks who walked, ran, biked, hopped or hitched from John O Groats to Lands end....what were you thinking?

All you need to know in the photo below...

Vintage Castle & Ancient Cars ( by Hugo in Lauder, United Kingdom )

As luck would have it, my trip to show some friends Thirlstane Castle in the Borders coincided with the yearly annual Vintage Car gathering. Excellent, not only an ancient fairytale castle but vintage dream cars too! I recommend it. If you are in the area then put 1st June 2009 in your diaries...

St Cuthbert's Way: Eildon Hills walk ( by Hugo in Melrose, United Kingdom )

The Eildon hills have always beckoned to me. The hills poke out above the flat landscape of the SW borders landscape and you just have to wonder what the views are like from the top. As it happens it is a fun pre-Sunday lunch walk taking 2-4 hours and is recommended.....for the views (and building up an appetite for Sunday lunch).

Bonfire, rain, friends and a happy new year ( by Hugo in Greenlaw, United Kingdom )

I had a wonderful new year celebration at home in Scotland.

All you need are some close chums, a bonfire and a little trumpet juice/ alcohol to help defeat the rain. For me the combo was unbeatable.

Happy new year to all.

Spiny forest, dancing sifaka and the ring tailed breakfast nabbers... ( by Hugo in Amboasary, Madagascar )

Heading out of Fort Dauphin there are number of options and tons to see. We had already had 2 weeks in Madagascar and wanted a soft (in other words easy) ending, hence the decision to head for Berenty (Reserve Privee de Berenty) which has a reputation for making life easy and having habituated fury creatures to gawp at. As it happened this turned out very well, as it was off-season and we basically had Berenty to ourselves and were always alone when viewing the little critters. The winners of the show were the delightful Verreaux Sifaka.

Caveat: My camera had packed in by this stage and I borrowed another friends broken camera to take these limited shots, which don't do justice to what we saw.

Fort Dauphin & the Lokaro Peninsula ( by Hugo in TôlaḤaro, Madagascar )

Fort Dauphin is a spingboard for yet more nature action but we had a break, taking it easy for a few days in the town, then heading out onto the Lokaro peninsular. Fort Dauphin is a pretty windy and inhospitable place, so it is important to identify the best spots to hang out...basically Lavasoa, Chez Georges and Camp Pirate!

The unsporty Sportive and other limestone Tsingy ( by Hugo in AntsiraḤana, Madagascar )

Diego Suarez (Antsirahana), is basically a seedy springboard into the National Parks of L'ankarana and Parc National de Montagne D'ambre.

We spent a week in this area and there are simply too many of the wonders of Madagascar to see in that time.

Here is a flavour of some of the sites and sounds to be found:
