The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 9- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia )

The road goes up into the hills passing through very pretty meadows and tree covered hills. There are buzzards everywhere, often sat right next to the road. They will sit there quite happily until they hear the sound of a lens cap being removed when they promptly fly away. Despite being a better 'road' it doesn't go through any towns so we only see a few cars all day. As it becomes dark the truck continues on but myself and Ed decide to stop for the night and set up camp in the middle of nowhere.

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 8- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Ulaangom, Mongolia )

We were 2nd in the queue for the border next morning an hour before it opened yet it still took 4 hours to get through. The time was passed by participating in the travelling circus that was the Mogol Rally with footballs, frisbees, minibikes and drunk locals featuring on the bill. Once through the Russian border there is a 20km drive to the Mongolian border and by the time we reached it they had shut for lunch. A few hours later we were through and finally into Mongolia proper. A few minutes later we were lost. We quickly came to realise that road maps in Mongolia are useless, mainly due to the fact that there are no roads!

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 7- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Barnaul, Russia )

From Almaty we spent two long days driving North back over the Kazakh plains to the Russian border. Immediately over the border the landscape changes, retaining the flatness but becoming cultivated with huge fields of wheat and sunflowers. I hadn't expected Siberia to remind me of Lincolnshire but that's what it resembles.

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 6- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Andijon, Uzbekistan )

Samarkand came as a welcome relief after the border chaos. A bed and breakfast based around a quiet courtyard with green tea and watermelon served on arrival. All this served whilst sat an what looks like a large bedframe with a table in the middle. Unlike most of the towns we've passed through so far the past is very evident in Samarkand. The Registan with it's large blue domes and azure tiling is impressive on a grand scale. Other Mosques around the town and also it's bazaar with stalls piled high with dried fruits, almonds and other nuts hint at it's silk route past.

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 5- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Tashkent, Uzbekistan )

I'm finding internet connections quite difficult to find as we are doing a lot of camping, but here's the latest update.

We arrived at the Uzbek border near Tashkent at 3pm. Forget anything I said about Russian borders, this border took us 18 hours to get across. Again there weren't many cars when we arrived however a number seemed to be going down the 'fast lane' usually after a quick exchange of dollars with a border guard. We tried this but our skills obviously weren't up to that of the locals.

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 4- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Москва, Russia )

To bring you up to date;

After leaving Poland and the easy parts of Europe things started to change. We had our first crash in Lithuania. Around midnight we were travelling at around 90mph when the brand new dual carriageway we were on just came to a dead end. We managed to slam the breaks on but just scraped the diversion sign which had obviously been knocked over by a previous traveller. After this the road became a dirt track so we decided just to camp by the side of the road.

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 3- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Praha, Czech Republic )

We arrived into Prague about 7pm after a relatively short 5 hour drive from Gottingen. Other cars continued to roll in as we enjoyed a few beers at the Cafe Dinitz.
We did receive one piece of very useful advice in Prague from the receptionist at the Apple Hostel. When we asked if there were any curtains to stop the 3 street lights directly outside the window from streaming into the room or to help reduce the noise from the concrete mixer being used in the all night construction opposite she helpfully lectured us "An advice, when traveling always take an eye-mask and earplugs."
After a late night we managed to get to the unpronounceable Wroclaw in Southern Poland. This turns out to be a very picturesgue old town based around a river and a couple of islands. However we have just a few hours here before heading to Lithuania tomorrow.

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 2- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in Göttingen, Germany )

So far so good. We made it to Göttingen on our first day, arriving around 3am. This is better than some teams we passed. One having caught fire in Hyde Park, another having to make a stop at a Kwikfit centre on the outskirts of London for a new exhaust!

The Mongol Rally 2007 Part 1- Team Kukulcan ( by davidhka in London, United Kingdom )

To sum this up it's 10,000 miles, 7 mountain ranges, 3 deserts, bandits, roads ranging from bad to non-existent and all this in a car we swapped for a bag of crisps.

Welcome to the start of our Team Kukulcan Mongol Rally adventure.

Here is a map of our proposed route to give you the idea.
