Matheran: the sound of silence ( by itchyfeet76 in Mātherān, India )

After a fortnight of sightseeing, delicious dinners and parties in beloved Mumbai, it seemed time to take a break from the smog. My lungs were crying out for a break from the city distinctly unfresh air.

The hill station of Matheran, an eco–sensitive region, was the chosen spot, 100 kilometres from Mumbai. It was ‘discovered’ in 1850 by one Hugh Mallet, the then Collector of Thane during British colonial rule. The hill town became more popular during the patronage of Lord Elphinston, the first Governor of Bombay.

A train dream ( by Samster in Pathānkot, India )

It really should have been easy. After all, I had done the same journey previously two years before. And well, this time their were five of us travelling together. We were on a 16 hour train journey to Pathankot, Northern India, trying to escape the heat of the south and make the relatively cool climate of Himachal Pradesh.

There was only one catch...the train arrived in the middle of the night at our stop before going on to Kashmir. And it was an Indian train, which meant of course no fixed arrival time. Some of us decided to sleep, others stay awake. Not a good plan. The train arrived in Pathankot with us all wrapped deeply in wonderful dreamland. Thomas, a friend we were travelling with, realised it in the last few moments before the train started to move!
He gave a yell which began a flurry of movement as we all dreary eyed scampered into action. But the corridors were blocked by a teeming mass of sleeping Indian bodies and the only way out was through the side window...wh...

The walk of life ( by Samster in Benares, India )

A walk along the River Ganges in Varanasi is a crazy experience that encapsulates all the mystery, dirt, confusion and magic of India. Along these famous ghats (or steps) that look down upon the holiest of holies, the river Ganga, is a spectacle that is just impossible to imagine. Naked Saddhus (holy men that have renounced all possessions) jostle with women washing clothes, while small boys play cricket in the background. Brahmins (the higher and more educated caste) sit on the banks of the river purifying themselves with a swim, playing chess and intellectualising. The odd foreigner walks buy with a camera generally confused at the sight, while Hindu families from all over India come to cremate their dead on the holy banks. Monkeys prey the rooftops looking for morsels, and small children try to sell you candles to make a wish in the river. Varanasi is renowned for its music, and many foreigners come here to learn the tabla, flute, sitar and other Indian instruments. Watch out f...
